£8,500. This painting is one of only 2 studies available for sale for Gollon's great Stations of the Cross series. It is an official study for a major public commission. It is a study for Station XII: Jesus Dies on the Cross. The children, having perhaps been taken to "enjoy" the spectacle of a Crucifixion, or having come across it, are horrified and it is The Magdalene who guides them away. The Magdalene is seen in this study, and in Stations VIII and XIII (see Commissions page of chrisgollon.com), and one of these children is perhaps the same child in Stations II and IV. The balloon, as though a pleasurable experience had been expected, makes the horror of the bloodied feet of Christ and the children's reaction all the more powerful. There is also the harsh silhouette of a soldier's spear against a pale moon on a gold sky.
Strangely, in terms of the colours, the gold background, The Magdalene and the paint itself, this work is quite beautiful and hypnotic. It holds our contemplation of this moment on the Way of the Cross.
