BEING HUMAN--paintings by Chris Gollon
Date: 4th July - 8th Aug 2009
Location: IAP Fine Art, 65 Roman Rd, London E2 0QN
Angels
Selected new paintings by Chris Gollon on the theme of 'being human', showing the innovations in technique and imagery which Gollon brings to the human form, allowing it to hold an idea. Chris Gollon was invited to become a Fellow and First Artist in Residence (Jan-Mar 2009) at the prestigious Institute of Advanced Study, Durham University, and to work with some of the world's leading academics to describe 'being human' in the 21st century. Gollon’s powerful and formally innovative paintings first came to the attention of the Directors of the IAS in 2007, and together with leading creative thinkers from 3 continents he was invited to take part in 'Being Human', a major international research project straddling all disciplines from Arts & Humanities, to Sciences and Social Sciences.
Beast
Impressed by Gollon's innovations both in technique and in his image-making, as he describes the human condition in a unique way, the IAS saw his studio as a place of experimentation akin to a scientific laboratory. His images affected and influenced the thinking and works of the academics, and their theories and words gave Chris Gollon the footholds for developing his own imagery: resulting in a unique interaction and 16 remarkable new paintings on the Being Human theme (a selection of which we are displaying until 8th August). Among the works shown, with great innovation and ambiguity, Gollon depicts the scala naturae: ‘the great chain of being’.
