'The Dancing Philosophers''The Dancing Philosophers' This new exhibition shows a range of Chris Gollon's recent paintings, some of which are featured in the new book 'CHRIS GOLLON: Humanity in Art' by Tamsin Pickeral (Hyde & Hughes). Signed copies of the book are available at the gallery, price £20. (See Latest News)

The works in this exhibition include some of the latest monotypes which Chris Gollon produced in early 2010 at the Goldmark Atelier in Rutland. They show his many innovations, and the unusual use of 'positives' and solvents in the process.

Printmaking--in particular monotypes--has been a major influence on Gollon's painting techniques. With the "wrong end" of the brush he often scratches outlines into the surface paint to reveal an electric yellow or red in the underpainting, making lines which draw and animate the objects or figures, and which have considerable lyrical beauty (for example, in this still life). Gollon also paints water back in to remove acrylic pigment to create great movement, as in the 'Dancing Philosopher Playing Air Guitar (above).

The use of solvents in monotypes, and how they disperse pigment, Gollon has also imported into acrylic painting by using water in a staining process (see the staining technique used on the neck of 'Sketch for a Woman'). The exhibition comprises monotypes, etchings, and recent paintings, many of which are featured and described in Tamsin Pickeral's monograph.
