The relationship between Maggi Hambling and Amanda Barrie was the inspiration for the Laugh paintings. Hambling on Barrie: “Aside from her glamour, Amanda can be achingly funny, and we can laugh our way through a lot of champagne."
This coincided with the stock market crash and the fact that economically the art world in London at that time was in such deep depression, the only thing left to do was to laugh. See also the oil Secret Laugh from the same series.
