Stephen Fry Musing is an original portrait, and derives from a full-length, life-size painting now in a private collection.
Hambling chose to make this edition a 3/4-length portait of her friend Stephen Fry, hand-touching many of the screens to ensure that the rich saturation contrast of the blues was maintained.
Fry posed for the artist in the early 1990s before playing Oscar Wilde in the film ‘Wilde’, and before Hambling created her sculpture of Wilde now opposite Charing Cross Station. (Click Sculpture to view).
This edition was published in 2006 by IAP Fine Art and Maggi Hambling, in collaboration with master printmaker Ian Wilkinson at Limberhurst Press. Stephen Fry and George Melly both attended the press launch, and £75 from each sale goes to the Terrence Higgins Trust, helping people with HIV and AIDS.
