In the early tradition of European still life painting that actually began in Toledo, the old capital of Spain, objects had religious symbolism. For example, the lemon was fidelity in love, water was the Virgin Mary. Hope was symbolised by a lit candle. This beautiful and completely hand-wrought candelabra, designed and made by one of the UK's leading master jewellers, we chose to include with lit candles, since whether still in isolation, or emerging into a world much changed, we all live in hope for a better future. The choice of red candles shows well the heart-shaped windows in the candle cups, which also remind us that love and tolerance together with hope might help us all.
A leading artwork for this exhibition, it is also shown reflected in 'Four Squares (after Malevich)' by Possible Mirror.
Solid sterling silver 6-branch candelabra, perfectly weighted and balanced; it was designed and hand-made by master jeweller Paul Hatton, September 2018, and is totally unique.
