Peter Blake CBE RDI RA (born 1932) is a contemporary British artist known for his striking portraits and his association with the Pop Art movement, evident in work including On the Balcony (1955) and Self Portrait with Badges (1962). Blake studied at the Gravesend School of Art and the Royal College of Art, London. His varied artistic career led to him receiving a Knighthood in 2002 for his services to the visual arts.
Alongside David Hockney, Patrick Caulfield, and Richard Hamilton, Blake sourced imagery from popular culture to produce colourful and distinctly graphic works. He is perhaps best known for creating the album cover for The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band with his then wife, Jann Haworth, in 1967. He also created album covers for other musicians including his former RCA student Ian Dury (New Boots and Panties, 1979).
Blake's works are included in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, and the Pallant House Gallery in Chichester. Peter Blake currently lives and works in London.
