This work in pastel is from Blackburn's time in Australia; the predominant earthy red tones recall sandstone. This composition cleverly evokes a geological map with its strata and fault lines. There are yellow accents which enliven the work, an orange chevron points up to the off white band at the top which suggests a horizon. As with Blackburn's other artworks the landscape is pared back - this pastel is about mark making and surface, both key concerns of modernism.
