View on a Wall
Since the early 2000s, Maggi Hambling's main muse has been the North Sea. An early riser, working on the east coast in her home county of Suffolk, she mainly draws inspiration from the ever-changing moods and colours of the sea at sunrise. Her rarer 'Wall of Water' paintings, draw inspiration from the gigantic waves crashing against the sea wall at Southwold. Therefore, this series of three works are both new and rare in that they are both sunsets and walls of water. The cobalt blue is electric, as are the rich, warm tones of the sun's last rays, playing on the unchained, crashing bodies of water.
