This painting on Khadi paper is from the last series of works on a theme that Chris Gollon painted before his untimely death in April 2017. The 'Gimme Some Wine' series takes its title and partial inspiration from the eponymous song by Eleanor McEvoy, which she wrote for and dedicated to Chris Gollon. The song was also inspired by Gollon's painting 'Dreaming of Leaving' (NAKED MUSIC series), which in turn had taken partial inspiration from the song of the same title Eleanor McEvoy co-wrote with Lloyd Cole (from the NAKED MUSIC album, 2016, itself a collaboration with Chris Gollon. The Gollon/McEvoy two-year exercise in artistic boundary crossing---where one art form is in dialogue with another---began with the NAKED MUSIC series of paintings, album and songbook, and ended with the Gimme Some Wine song and series of paintings. The use of blue also came from a conversation between Eleanor McEvoy and Chris Gollon at the Louder Than Words Festival in November 2016, when Eleanor revealed her love of Picasso's Blue Period, which she had been introduced to by her father when she was a child. Chris Gollon that same evening heard news of the death of his only and younger brother, Jeff Gollon. Just as Picasso assuaged his grief at the loss of a close friend by limiting his palate, Chris Gollon decided to adopt the same discipline in a similar hope after his loss, as well as the colour blue lending itself to his reply in paint to Eleanor McEvoy's beautiful song. Chris Gollon enjoyed painting on Indian acid-free handmade Khadi paper, since it has such great texture.
