    Banksy

    Napalm, 2004

Banksy began as a street artist in Bristol in the 1990’s and achieved fame with his characteristic stencilled graffiti. ‘Banksy’ is a pseudonym, originating with the ‘tags’ graffiti artists used to sign their work.

Banksy uses satire, appropriation, and dark humour often with decidedly political content. While the early works were conceived as typically temporary urban street art, in the last decades he has followed artists such as Keith Haring and moved into gallery-based work.  In Banksy’s case this has mainly involved publishing prints under his company Pest Control.

In the last few years his work has attracted great interest on the secondary market and has achieved high prices at auction.
